The new year is here, and with it, new hopes for the future. Just as 2025 was ending, on the 17th of December, the European Parliament adopted a resolution supporting My Voice, My Choice, the initiative created by Europe’s largest feminist movements that supports safe and accessible abortion.
This achievement was possible thanks to the over million of people that signed the petition, supporting the European Citizen’s initiative and the more than 300 organisations that started and promoted the ambitious proposal. Now… what’s next?
My Voice, My Choice: a journey for freedom
The European citizen’s initiative “My Voice, My Choice: For Safe and Accessible Abortion” was submitted to the European Commission on the first of September 2025, after receiving the support of 1,124,513 verified EU citizens since its registration in April 2025.

The text proposes a voluntary-based, financial support system, financed with EU funds, open to each and every State Member to enable them to guarantee the access to safe abortion practices to those who lack it.
Even though abortion is considered a simple and safe healthcare intervention, around 45% of abortions are done in unsafe conditions, leading to physical and mental health complications and social and financial burdens for the women in question, according to the World Health Organization.
The difficulty in finding a safe, legal way to abortion and the stigma surrounding it makes women afraid of reaching for abortion care when they need it the most, but it is their right. In some countries, there are even restrictive abortion regulations put in place by governments, making it difficult for women to have access to safe abortions, leaving them with no choices other then illegal and risky practices that will lead to health complications. According to the WHO, 7 million women per year are treated in hospital facilities for complications due to unsafe abortions.

This is exactly why we need the My Voice, My Choice initiative: to get safe and accessible abortion practices a standard all around Europe and save women’s lives.
The next steps for safe and accessible abortion
The European Commission has until March 2026 to respond with the actions it intends to take towards the resolution, so the fight isn’t over yet. Everyday, even with a positive outcome form the EU Commission, we need to keep fighting for a better, safer future for women. You can join My Voice, My Choice, and keep up with updates and news from the initiative.

Even though most of MEPs (358) voted in favour of the initiative, 202 voted against, making abortion a controversial topic still to this day. A simple healthcare intervention that, if done safely, can save lives, should be a right: it symbolizes the right of a woman to choose for herself, her right to a life, her right to her own body.
